LOST Season Premiere, part 2

Now that I've recovered a bit from the whirlwind of information known as the LOST Season 5 Premiere, I wanted to expand upon my thoughts on the show.

It seems that the woman at the end of the show has been working on a scientific formula with her chalkboard and swinging pendulum to determine the exact moment in time and space when the Oceanic 6 can return to the island.

The "Event Window" has been determined to occur in 70 hours.

I would say it's going to take, oh, about 70 hours in TV land time to make it through this season, so that works out perfectly. Their time is slightly different from real time, of course, because half of the cast is constantly moving back and forth through time.

Jack now has to gather up the Oceanic 6 and convince all of them to return to the Island. This is going to be tricky since Hurley is on his way to jail and Kate doesn't want to go. Sayid and Sun seem to be a little easier to convince.

Kate will probably be swayed by her desire to reunite with Sawyer, although she will be haunted by the memory of Claire warning her to "NEVER" take Aaron back to the island.

My theory is that all of the survivors must all be in place on the island, just as they were in the past, to somehow stop the island from jumping through time. If one person is missing, or if an extra person is there -- Penny, for example -- it won't work. This must be one of the "exceptions" to the rules of time travel that Daniel Faraday talked about.

Meanwhile, some of the people left on the island are suffering the harsh physical effects of jumping back and forth through time. We all know that the nose bleeds are just the first sign the person will go crazy and then spontaneously combust... or something like that.

So, is Locke really dead? I think he is. However, I think that when the survivors go back to the island and they are all in the exact spots where they were at a precise moment -- the Event Window -- that everything will return to the way it was at that moment. Even though Faraday said you can't change the past, I believe the Event Window will allow them to bring Locke back to life.

The best line from the night came from Hurley:

"I'm a murderer. I killed four people. Three people... however many are dead, I killed them all."

Biggest question:

Who was Neil again? I completely forgot about him. And who were those guys throwing the fire darts at him? Were they the Dharma people? Or the Others? Or someone else?

And was that Sun in the beginning of the show? And who was she with? Was that the Dharma guy who makes the videos? I need to go back and review that part. I was so full of anticipation that I couldn't focus correctly.

And can Benjamin really return to the island? In Season Four, he said that once he turned the big wheel, he would never be able to return. Can he only return if he goes through the Event Window?

Oh... and how will Locke orchestrate his own death?

If you have any theories, please let me know. If you don't even watch the show, but you were so kind to read this whole thing, then thank you! You are a true friend.

  2. Oh my gosh! You poor thing! How did you manage to read all that if you don't watch the show?!?!

  3. 1. Can't wait to see how Locke kills himself. (Is that too morbid?)

    2. Love your theory about the event window and all of the "right" people having to be back there. That makes a lot of sense.

    3. I don't think that was Sun with crazy Dharma doctor guy...but it did look somewhat like her.

    4. Neil is Alex's (Ben's daughter)boyfriend that Kate and Sawyer helped rescue right? I mean that's who I thought he was.

My thoughts on the premier are up at

  4. Crystal... after reading your recap, just a couple other points...

I think the rules don't apply to Desmond because he has already successfully gone back and forth and around and around through time and then he was able to make his time switching stop when he found his constant. Does that make sense?

I was SOOOO expecting Boone to walk up to that plane when Locke was lying there.

Hurley's recap to his mom was hilarious! I loved that part, too.

I was thinking that Neil was Alex's boyfriend, too, but he just looked different. Maybe he lost a lot of weight since the last season?? Not sure.

  5. Just a few comments on one of my favorite subjects in TVLand...
1.The girl with the Dharma guy was not Sun. At first I thought the man was Jin with another woman since they didn't show his face for so long.
    2. I think Sun and Peggy's father now have something going on; don't you think the interaction at the airport was strange, and then the interesting conversation with her and Kate? Something is up.
    3. I thought Neil was the boyfriend too, but it's not the same guy. Remember--he died running through the jungle last season.
    4. I agree it was strange that Hurley helped Sajid (sp?) after he said he wouldn't. Hmmmm.....
    5. I also agree that somehow Locke will come back to life when time changes back on the island. Maybe they will be able to go there and change time back to before the crash, and apply everything they have learned to their earlier lives. I mean, all the bodies of the deceased are still on the island, right? So everyone can just live happily ever after!

  6. Oh, Michele... I'm SO GLAD you joined in on the discussion! I couldn't wait until Friday to get your thoughts.

You are right about Sun and her scariness. She was freaking me out when she confronted Kate. I don't think she's choosing forgiveness as much as she pretends to be!

I saw the season premiere as one big teaser of everything that is yet to come and so I tried not to get too hung up on all the details. I know it will all be explained this season. =]

  7. Came over from rocks in the dryer.
Neil is not the boyfriend--that was Carl and he was killed with Alex's mother before Alex was. Miles found their bodies. For what it's worth--I think the voices they hear are the ppl that the first time around on island were alive but when Ben came back and did the purge and set it on a time loop then they weren't physically there but in time they existed past that time.
    I know gives one a headache. . .

  8. Anonymous,

Thanks for stopping by... I figured that out about Carl, too. I knew that guy was dead! Check out my next post on "What if" for more info about Neil.

Good theory on the voices. Like you said, it's mind boggling. =]
