Souper Saturday... God showed up!

I'm feeling very awed and humbled after the amazing women's event we had at our church on Saturday evening.

I feel so privileged that I get to organize the women's ministry at my church, but I had not planned anything since last August. I was kind of overwhelmed with being in my third trimester of pregnancy, starting homeschool, then having a baby and adjusting to life with a newborn and four kids. In the meantime, my buddy who helped me with the leadership role decided to leave our church to find a church closer to her home.

I hadn't done anything with Women's Link for so long I wondered if I should just let it quietly fade away and hope that no one noticed. I felt so brain dead that I really had no creative ideas, no direction and no vision.

But then I had a bright idea! Maybe I should pray about it! =]

I sat down at my computer not long after that and was amazed as ideas starting pouring into my head. It was totally a God thing.

**

Our first event of the year was Souper Saturday. The women in our church have been through a lot in the past few years. Many of us experienced the death of a young mom who we all loved. Others have gone through cancer, a debilitating illness or a medical condition that makes life difficult.

Some have experienced miscarriages, the loss of a child or are raising a child with a severe medical condition. Women have lost jobs or their husbands have been without work not just for months, but years.

It's so tempting in these situations to ask, "Where is God?" "Why doesn't he show up?"

The truth is the Bible doesn't promise that life will always be easy.

"Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world. " ~ John 16:33

His ways are often impossible to understand. But he also promises that we don't have to walk through the tough times alone. He is faithful. He is good. And he won't leave us.

Our speakers were three ordinary women who have faced extraordinary circumstances this past year. Two of them, Terra and Katie, have blogs that you should read to get the whole story. The stories were so powerful that they brought everyone to tears. God showed up.

**

In the past, we always had 25 women attend our Women's Link events. Because new families have joined our church since then, I estimated we would have about 30 attend this time.

But the excitement started growing, and Souper Saturday began taking on a life of it's own. As more people signed up and started talking about it, more people wanted to sign up. Even with only a few days left, women were still e-mailing me asking if they could come.

In the end, 63 women signed up — more than double our attendance before. God showed up!

**

Originally, I had planned to have the event on a Saturday in March and had made plans to rent out a meeting room that would have held 40 people. A conflict came up and I had to change the date, even after I had announced it to the women at our church.

I also had to find a new location. I asked my friend, Michelle, if we could use her home. She lives in a restored 100-year old home, and she loves to host. Michelle could have panicked as our numbers grew. But instead, she wasn't fazed. "No big deal! I'll just move all of my furniture into the garage!" God showed up.

**

The next problem was finding chairs and tables for everyone. Someone suggested I ask two guys at our church to help move large tables and stacks of chairs from our church office to Michelle's house. Our church meets in a high school, so we don't have a physical location where we can host things like this.

The two men were more than happy to help and moved the furniture in and out like it was no big deal. God showed up!

**

But how would we feed 63 women? I had asked the women attending to sign up to bring either soup, salad, bread, dessert or drinks. Ten women brought big crock-pots of soup and another 10 brought salads. It was the most amazing array of "girl food" you can imagine. The women loved it! We also had WAY more than enough bread, desserts and drinks. God showed up!

With that many people and so many new women coming to this event for the first time, I wanted to have some type of assigned seating. But I didn't want to be the one making the assignments.

As the women walked in, we asked them to take a table number to determine where to sit. It was amazing to hear the stories later about how well the seating arrangements turned out.

I needed to sit at a table near the front so I could get up and down quickly as the "MC" for the night. It sounds strange, but with so many details on my mind, I kind of forgot about the two women I had invited to attend.

When they walked in, they had "randomly" drawn the number for my table! Both of these women have faced extraordinary circumstances of their own. One lives daily with the effects of Lyme disease. The other discovered she had an aggressive form of breast cancer at the age of 35. She recently finished a year of treatment. Make sure you read her story here.

It was great to get to sit with these friends I have known for many years but only reconnected with recently. Two other women sat at our table, which was a nice cozy little refuge for me when I wasn't speaking up front. Even the other two women at our table made amazing connections, such as finding out two of them attended the same high school! God showed up!

**

I get a little obsessed with the decor at these events, as I've already mentioned. During one of my long nights up with the baby, I had the idea that I should decorate using soup cans and soup ingredients.

I had already found a little recipe holder box that I wanted to put on the tables and decide to use it as the basis of my color scheme — lime green, turquoise and brown. (You can see from my blog that I like those colors!) I found matching tablecloths that made the place look really bright and festive.

I looked online and got the idea to make fake soup can labels in those colors. I called the soups, "Friendship Soup," "Community Soup" and "Cream of Caring". I will have to post a close-up later of the soup can labels. They included an ingredient list, nutrition info, directions and a recipe, just like a regular soup can, but I changed the words to match the type of soup.

Believe me. In my sleep-deprived state, I couldn't have thought of this idea on my own. God showed up!

**

So many other details came together in such an amazing way. A woman I didn't know that well offered to add her creative touches to some gifts I needed. They were way cuter than anything I could have made!

Another woman brought a microphone and speaker at the last minute. With so many women, they couldn't have heard a word without it!

And Baby Jayda even started taking a bottle just a few days before, allowing me to attend without her. God showed up!

Soup's on!

You might be thinking that my blog has been a little dull lately because I'm so sleep deprived, I'm spending so much time wrapping up the school year, I'm busy working on my taxes or I'm tackling the 21 loads of dirty laundry in this house.

And that would make sense.

But actually, I've been spending all of my waking moments lately trying to think of recipes that involve canned goods so I can use the empty cans, making artwork out of beans and playing with PhotoShop. And that can only mean one thing.

I'm busy planning a women's event at my church.

This event is going to be amazing. It's called "Souper Saturday", and we will be blessed to hear from three ordinary women who have faced extraordinary circumstances this past year. I have a feeling that God is going to be moving in some hearts on Saturday night, and I'm privileged to get to be part of the planning process.

But I'm a detail person, so I get excited about putting together all the little touches at the last minute. You know how much I love a theme and a color scheme.

And since I can't keep a secret, and I'm bursting with excitement, here's a sneak peek at what I've been up to the past few days.

I'm hoping it will be souper.

Got game?

I feel so immensely blessed that I get to volunteer for a position at my church that is so much fun for me.

I don't mind to serve in children's ministry or hand out bulletins or greet people when they arrive.

But I get so excited when I get to help plan an event to get women together for an evening to be encouraged in their faith, grow in their relationships with God and others, and have fun!

And I especially love this volunteer position when it involves color-coordinated table cloths and a theme. Oh, how I love a theme!

I decided to start posting some of the details of our women's ministry events to help other people who might be needing an idea or some inspiration.

Last night, we had our last event of our first "ministry year", so we decided to do something that was just FUN! The first thing that came to mind was a game night. It started as a little seed planted in our brains, but grew into a full-blown theme with a color scheme, party favors, team cheers and even a devotional!

The hardest part was actually coming up with a name. After more than an hour of brainstorming, my co-coordinator, Lara, and I settled on "Girlfriends, Get Your Game On: NOT Your Ordinary Game Night."

We decided to keep most of the details of the evening a secret during all of our promotions of the event.

We played my favorite game, Cranium. But instead of just moving pawns around the game board, we decided to assign the women to teams beforehand and ask them to come dressed not only in a team color, but to create a team identity matching the categories in the game.

We bought tablecloths and paper goods to match the four team colors.

We weren't sure if the women would get on board and come dressed in their assigned colors since we really didn't tell them the details of what would be happening. But the women came through with flying colors!

The Data Heads dressed in red and brought calculators as their "signature item."

The Creative Cats wore blue and decorated their faces to look like cats.

The Word Worms brought a couple of word worms of their own. And they did a cheer in which they spelled their team name wrong and then corrected themselves.

Very creative! ... and funny!

I was the captain of the green team, the Star Performers. We glammed ourselves up with wigs, boas, beads, rings and musical instruments.

Some of us... OK, maybe just ONE of us, even took the color scheme all the way down to her toes. I'm actually starting to really like this nail polish!

We had our own mascot, Barbie with a Brittney Spears wig. This 40-year-old Barbie could use a little glam, too!

We asked the teams to come up with a cheer, chant or song to describe their team. The green team did a little song and dance to the tune of "So long, farewell..." from The Sound of Music.

We dance.

We sing.

We wear a lot of green.

Do-do-do-do-do. Do-do-do-do-do-do.

We're Star Performers.

Don't mess with our team.

Do-do-do-do-do. Do-do-do-do-do-do.

So long. Farewell.

Go green. Go green. Go green!

With about 25 women in attendance, actually playing Cranium was a bit of a challenge. But the women did their best to pay attention, and it was a lot of fun!

We gave a prize basket full of summertime goodies to the team that won the game (hooray for yellow!), and the team with the most team spirit (go green!!).

For our food, we had a pie-judging contest. We asked everyone to bring a pie, but to think creatively. So, "pie" could include anything from blueberry, apple or peach to pizza pie, taco pie or ice cream pie. The bake-off winner was awarded a cookbook for her prize.

Finally, Lara put together an amazing devotional using Cranium as her inspiration. She talked about how each of us is made in the image of God. Even if we don't feel like we are creative, good with words, a star performer or someone who understands data, God has all of those qualities. And since we were created in His image, so do we!

For example, maybe we aren't great with words in terms of writing or spelling, but we might have the gift of encouraging others with our words. She gave lots of other great examples.

Most of the women who attended our event said they had a lot of fun last night. But I'm not sure they could have had as much fun as we did planning it!

sharing our secrets

Wow! I just had such a cool morning that I wanted to try to share a little of it here.

My friend, Lara, and I are about to finish up our first year of co-leading the women's ministry at our church. This was the first year that our small church has had a specific, organized effort aimed just at women, so we pretty much had an open path to decide what to do.

We have planned several events throughout this first year, but this morning's was really amazing in so many ways.

In our church, as in so many other places, a lot of families are facing tough times. People have been out of work for a year or more. We have lots and lots of new moms trying to figure out how to balance their time and spending. Plus, who HASN'T been affected by the slump in the economy.

So, we decided to put together a very practical mini conference on ideas to not only survive, but to thrive, in these tough economic times.

It was really amazing, actually to see how it all came together. Because it was so obvious that GOD really was working behind the scenes.

I mean it even started with our theme. We came up with the acronym SOS for Sharing Our Secrets since we would have six different women speak on their passion in this area.

As women, of course we love a theme. And we couldn't believe how by this morning, we were able to incorporate nautical terms into the names of each talk: "Help! I'm Sinking!", "We're All in the Same Boat", "Not Getting Caught in the Undertow" (those were just a few).

We came up with cute life preserver stickers for our folders and nametags and even found paper in matching colors with a lighthouse background.

Even better, with a workshop on this particular topic, we were determined to make it free. And it was amazing how we were able to pull everything together for basically NO expense. The women in attendance contributed a yummy spread of breakfast foods, and we used our own computers and printers to add the design elements to spruce up our handouts. We could tell that God had a hand in even the tiny details of taking this event from blah to cool and cute!

Our six speakers covered a variety of topics, all related to the theme. But they all came from different perspectives, varying stages in life and had a unique story to tell.

I was struck by each one. Kara talked about how her small group has been convicted to share what they have with each other. Their stuff. Their extra groceries. Their time. And even their talents (like being able to build a fence or style hair!).

Cheryl shared how she has been convicted to stop spending money on herself for an entire year. It was amazing to hear how God has provided for her specific needs in this area in ways she would have never expected.

Lara is our resident grocery shopping expert. She gave us amazing tips on how she combines coupons and the sales at grocery stores to come away with a shopping cart full of food that is nearly free. Wow!

Emily S. shared her mom's secrets of stretching food to make lots of meals from one type of meat and how to use ammonia, vinegar and baking soda to clean almost anything.

And Julie told us some amazing stories about how her family had been blessed by "giving dangerously" even when times were tough. As the mother of a son with some serious medical needs, she also has learned to humbly receive help from others, which is probably just as difficult as giving!

I came away from the morning with a new perspective on how I use my resources. Just because I have enough money to buy myself something, doesn't mean I should. And just because I can get my groceries for a decent price at Meijer might not mean I'm being the wisest steward of my money if I could become more of a "stealth" shopper. I need to think more about sharing. And giving. And shopping to help others, not just myself.

I have lots of thoughts swirling in my head, so I will be thinking about how to apply just one to my life right away. If you attended this morning, I would love to hear your reaction.

And if you didn't, let me know your thoughts in this area of spending, sharing and giving!

shades of blue

Have you ever bought a new car? You fell in love with the model and the color and knew it perfectly fit your unique style?

Then you drove to the mall for the first time and when you came out you couldn't find it? Because there were 20 other cars exactly like yours? And you never even noticed that kind of car before? Or that so many OTHER people also loved YOUR favorite car color?

Well, that's SORT OF like what happened to a group of women from my church recently, except in a really good way.

We were planning a peppermint theme for our first-ever women's Christmas event. Candy canes. Red roses. Red and white ornaments.

Then we went to look at the room where we would be holding the event and we immediately noticed the dark blue chairs. I went searching around for some nesting boxes for our illustration on "Unwrapping the Gift" of Christmas. I remembered I had a stack in my basement in blue and white.

So, we decided that rather than fighting the blue, we would go with a Winter Wonderland theme.

Suddenly, we started noticing that every store in town had tons of blue and white Christmas decor. Since blue usually makes me feel, well, a little blue, I must have always headed straight for the greens, with their calming effect.

We had four "table hostesses" and we asked each one to decorate her table with only one criteria: It needed to be in shades of blue and white. The result was amazing! Each table was wonderfully unique and beautiful, and the whole room was coordinated even though it was put together without anyone knowing what the others were doing.

This is my table. I went with a sweets theme. Imagine that.

This is Lara's table. She had this really cool ice-skate planter to work with.

This is Lori's table. Don't you love her china? And that glittery silver garland?

This is Jolie's table. The ornaments in the glasses made it so elegant.

These are the cute little jars of hot cocoa mix that each woman got to take home with her.

I've never felt so good surrounded by shades of blue.
